11 Cebu localities under MECQ due to COVID-19 surge

Eleven localities in Cebu province, comprising three cities and eight towns, have been placed under modified enhanced community quarantine (MECQ) with heightened restrictions starting August 11, 2021, due to a surge in COVID-19 cases.

The affected cities are Talisay, Naga, and Carcar, while the towns include Consolacion, Liloan, Minglanilla, Sibonga, Argao, Samboan, Oslob, and Cordova.

Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia issued the executive order for stricter lockdown measures after the province saw a 119 percent two-week growth rate of new COVID-19 infections.

On August 9, Cebu recorded 187 new cases, 25 new deaths, bringing the total active cases to 4,408 and the death toll to 1,029.

The governor had initially appealed a recommendation for the entire province to be placed under MECQ from August 1 to 15, which was granted, allowing it to remain under general community quarantine until the recent surge.

In addition to existing health protocols, the new restrictions mandate the installation of high-efficiency particulate air filters and ionizers in offices.

Establishments and offices are also required to undergo regular cleaning using ultraviolet germicidal light.
