Wawa Dam reaches critical level, red alert issued

The Wawa Dam in Pasig City reached its critical level on Monday afternoon due to continuous southwest monsoon rains, prompting a red alert.

As of noon, the water level at the dam was 134.06 meters above sea level, with Mayor Vico Sotto warning that an overflow could raise water levels in the Marikina River and necessitate evacuations.

By 1:53 p.m., the city's Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office raised the second alarm as the river reached 16 meters, signaling residents to prepare for possible evacuation.

Mayor Sotto advised residents not to panic but to follow instructions from barangay officials or disaster response teams if they advise evacuations.

Pasig City is coordinating with affected barangays along the floodways, particularly Santolan and Sta. Lucia, as water levels continue to rise due to ongoing heavy rains.
