Typhoon Julian evacuates 93 Batanes residents, causes P600M damage

Residents in several towns of Batanes have evacuated their homes due to the impact of Typhoon Julian, which is now under Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 4.

According to reports from GMA Integrated News' Jonathan Andal and Ivan Mayrina's Monday report on 24 Oras, 93 individuals or 22 families from Basco, Mahatao, Ivana, Itbayat, Uyugan, Sabtang, and other affected areas have left their houses as the typhoon intensifies.

Typhoon Julian has caused more than P600 million worth of damage in Batanes, felling trees, flooding homes, and damaging boats in Barangay Sinakan in Sabtang.

Roofing materials flew in Sabtang while emergency vehicles were stuck in muddy floodwaters in Uyugan, causing significant damage to homes and infrastructure. Clearing operations have begun for some areas with residents in Ivana clearing roads blocked by mud.

Based on PAGASA's latest bulletin, Julian’s eyewall passed over Sabtang on Monday, while the province continues to experience mudslides and rockslides despite the typhoon moving away from the Philippines.

PAGASA warns that although Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 remains in some areas of Northern Luzon, Julian may still affect Batanes before it officially exits the country and moves towards Taiwan on Friday night or Saturday morning.
