Tulfo calls for digital student verification at LRT/MRT

Senator Raffy Tulfo has called on the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to establish separate ticket booths for students at LRT and MRT stations in response to complaints about long lines and tedious verification procedures.

Based on inspections conducted by Tulfo's team, some students opt out of the 50% fare discount due to the 'time-consuming and inconvenient process'.

The DOTr has increased the student fare discount from 20% to 50%, effective June 20, for LRT-1, LRT-2, and MRT-3.

Tulfo urged the DOTr to develop a more efficient verification system by exploring digital alternatives and making the discount applicable to beep cards, as well as expanding coverage to stored value or beep cards.

Transport Secretary Vince Dizon confirmed that all MRT-3 stations have dedicated student lanes, with LRT-1 and LRT-2 set to follow suit.
