San Juan City launches P33 per kilo NFA rice, first in PH

On Monday, February 24, 2025, San Juan City became the first city in the Philippines to sell National Food Authority (NFA) rice at P33 per kilo under the national government's Food Security Emergency program.

San Juan City Mayor Francis Zamora and Department of Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. launched the initiative to provide residents with affordable food choices amid rising rice prices, emphasizing that this is the first such effort in the country.

The city government sold out all 1,000 sacks within hours of launching the program, prompting preparations for a second batch and offering 5-kilogram packs at P33 per kilo to make the program more accessible.

To further assist low-income residents, Mayor Zamora announced that both 50kg sacks priced at P1,650 and 5kg packs priced at P165 will be available for purchase after preregistration at the city hall lobby starting February 25.

The mayor also ordered that the city government would shoulder all logistical costs to ensure San Juaneños have access to affordable rice without additional financial burdens.
