HSI completes BRP Gregorio Del Pilar upgrade

Shipbuilder firm Herma Shipyard Inc. (HSI) announced on Wednesday the completion of the drydocking and upgrade of the Philippine Navy's BRP Gregorio Del Pilar (PS-15).

The upgrade ceremony was held at HSI's facility in Bataan, where the vessel was officially handed over to Commander Philip Plaza.

Collaborating with Hanwha Systems Co., Ltd. from South Korea, the project focused on enhancing the ship's defense systems.

This marks the completion of upgrades for all three Gregorio Del Pilar-Class frigates—PS-15, PS-16 (BRP Ramon Alcaraz), and PS-17 (BRP Andres Bonifacio).

The 3,250-ton ships were originally US Coast Guard Hamilton class high endurance cutters acquired by the Philippines between 2011 and 2016.

Herma Group Director Jose Exiquel Esguerra highlighted the contribution of his company to national defense through these enhancements, emphasizing the importance of industry partnerships for naval modernization.

Commander Phillip Plaza praised the collaboration with Herma Shipyard and South Korean Hanwha Group, noting that teamwork delivers optimum results in enhancing the country's maritime capabilities.
