DND plans new dockyards for incoming naval vessels

Philippines Secretary of National Defense Gilberto Teodoro Jr. announced plans to build new dockyards and shipyards to accommodate newly-acquired naval vessels arriving over the next three years.

Teodoro made this announcement during a forum at Ateneo de Manila University, emphasizing the need for secure facilities in the West Philippine Sea.

The defense minister highlighted that ten naval vessels are being built by foreign contractors—two missile corvettes and six offshore patrol vessels from South Korea and two landing docks from Indonesia—and will require new dockyards upon delivery.

These efforts align with the Self-Reliant Defense Posture Revitalization Act, aimed at boosting local production of defense equipment and enhancing command and control capabilities.

Teodoro stressed the importance of re-engineering infrastructure designs to support modernization goals and improve interoperability within the military.

The initiative complements the Comprehensive Archipelagic Defense Concept, which aims to strengthen maritime security in response to Chinese aggression in the West Philippine Sea.
