Phivolcs raises Kanlaon Volcano alert to Level 3 after eruption

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) raised Kanlaon Volcano on Negros Island to Alert Level 3 following an explosive eruption on December 9, 2024.

Kanlaon had been showing continuous seismic activity since June but was previously at Alert Level 2.

The upgrade to Alert Level 3 indicates that a magmatic eruption has begun and could lead to further explosive eruptions.

Phivolcs continues to monitor the volcano closely for any signs of increased activity or hazards to nearby communities.

Residents are advised to avoid entry into the four-kilometer permanent danger zone around Kanlaon Volcano due to potential hazards from sudden volcanic activity.
