Phil gov satisfied with Indonesia’s stance on Mary Jane Veloso clemency

The Philippine government expressed satisfaction with Indonesia's statement that it would respect any decision regarding Mary Jane Veloso, including the possibility of granting her clemency.

Justice Assistant Secretary Mico Clavano noted that under the Constitution, only President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has the authority to issue executive clemency for humanitarian reasons.

The DOJ remains optimistic but cannot preempt a decision from President Marcos Jr., who is considering various factors such as family appeals and legal convictions in Indonesia.

Indonesian senior minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra stated that Veloso may return home before Christmas, with officials from both countries meeting today to discuss the details of her repatriation.

Justice Undersecretary Raul Vasquez and other officials are attending a high-level meeting in Indonesia to finalize arrangements for Veloso's return.
