Ombudsman Martires clarifies no conflict with DOJ on VP Duterte probe

Ombudsman Samuel Martires clarified on Sunday that there is no conflict with the Department of Justice (DOJ) regarding the investigation into Vice President Sara Duterte's alleged threats.

Martires stated in an interview with Super Radyo DzBB that his previous remark was made without the necessary qualifier and he has not been harboring any ill feelings towards the DOJ, emphasizing that his office lacks jurisdiction to probe personal statements.

He reiterated that the Ombudsman only has authority over cases related to anti-graft practices and offenses committed in relation to official duties, questioning whether Duterte's threats were made during her official capacity as Vice President.

Martires addressed allegations of favoritism by highlighting his appointment in 2018 when former President Rodrigo Duterte instructed him to do what he thought was right without political interference.

He emphasized that his record shows no endorsements from the elder Duterte and stressed that they are serving their countrymen to the best of their abilities, rejecting unfair statements about political bias.
