Magsayo wins super featherweight bout, eyes world title

Former world champion Mark Magsayo secured a unanimous decision victory over Jorge Mata Cuellar in their 10-round super featherweight bout on Saturday, July 19 (Sunday, July 20, Philippine time) as part of Manny Pacquiao's comeback fight at MGM Grand.

Magsayo improved his record to 28-2 with 18 knockouts and claimed the WBC Continental Americas belt in a tough but impressive performance against Cuellar.

The Tagbilaran City, Bohol native had his best round in the fourth where he unloaded power shots, connecting on a variety of punches, while Cuellar showed resilience by absorbing many power shots and countering effectively.

With this win, Magsayo is expected to have another shot at a world title, following up Eumir Marcial's third-round stoppage victory over American Bernard Joseph in the non-televised curtain raiser.

Both fighters are preparing for memorable bouts that could be stepping stones to future world title bids.
