Magnitude 6.3 earthquake off Davao Occidental

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck offshore of Davao Occidental on Tuesday evening, April 22, with its epicenter located 295 kilometers southeast of Sarangani Island.

Intensity III (weak) shaking was reported in Malungon and General Santos City, while Intensity II tremors were recorded in Tupi, Koronadal City, Kiamba, Nabunturan, and other areas.

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) classified the earthquake as tectonic, triggered by an active fault near the epicenter at a depth of 117 kilometers.

According to Phivolcs, Intensity III is described as 'felt by many people indoors especially in upper floors of buildings. Vibration is felt like one passing of a light truck. Dizziness and nausea are experienced by some people. Hanging objects swing moderately. Still water in containers oscillates moderately.'

Damage and aftershocks may be expected following the tremor.
