Magnitude 5.8 quake off Cagayan, depth 10 km

A magnitude 5.8 earthquake struck the waters off Cagayan province near Calayan town on Sunday at 1:45 p.m., according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

The tremor, which was tectonic in origin with a depth of 10 kilometers, registered Intensity III in Claveria, Cagayan; Intensity II in Basco, Batanes; and Intensity I in Penablanca, Cagayan.

Aftershocks are expected following the initial tremor, but Phivolcs noted that no damage is anticipated.

This earthquake follows a magnitude 5.3 quake that hit off Calayan town on Saturday afternoon as Tropical Storm Crising (international name: Wipha) crossed extreme Northern Luzon.

Phivolcs recorded these details based on its automatic monitoring system data, emphasizing the continued seismic activity in the region.
