Rep Villafuerte proposes delaying BSKE from Dec 1, 2025 to Oct 26, 2026

Camarines Sur Rep. LRay Villafuerte is proposing to move the next Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) from December 1, 2025, to October 26, 2026.

Villafuerte argues that reducing the term of incumbent officials to less than three years could impact their performance and accountability.

He points out that a shorter term would contravene the three-year mandate for these positions as stipulated by the Constitution and Local Government Code.

The Commission on Elections (Comelec) chairperson, George Erwin Garcia, stated that Congress has the discretion to fix the date of BSKE, provided it adheres to Supreme Court guidelines.

Villafuerte's House Bill 10344 seeks to ensure elected officials fulfill their mandates for three years without extending current terms.

Comelec chief Garcia emphasized that they will continue with preparations for the polls scheduled for December 1, 2025, pending any legislative changes.
