Roque: Julian Felipe Reef not part of PH EEZ

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque stated on Tuesday that Julian Felipe Reef is not part of the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and has never been under Philippine possession.

Roque clarified that while the Philippines claims Julian Felipe Reef by virtue of a Presidential Decree issued by former President Ferdinand Marcos, it does not generate maritime territory for the country due to its distance from the Philippines.

Despite this, Roque emphasized that the Philippines' claim over Julian Felipe Reef has never been abandoned and remains valid under international law.

In March, hundreds of Chinese vessels gathered around Julian Felipe Reef, prompting diplomatic protests from the Philippine government. Reports indicate that most of these vessels have since left the area.
