Tokyo Olympics postponed to 2021

The Summer Olympics scheduled for this year in Tokyo have been officially postponed to 2021 due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In a joint statement, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe agreed that the Games must be rescheduled beyond 2020 but not later than summer 2021 to ensure the health and safety of all involved.

The decision was made during a conference call with other officials from the IOC and the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, including Mori Yoshiro, Hashimoto Seiko, Koike Yuriko, John Coates, Christophe De Kepper, and Christophe Dubi.
