Filipino chess players win medals at Eastern Asia Youth

Christian Gian Karlo Arca and Ivan Travis Cu secured podium finishes in separate categories at the rapid event of the 9th Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championships on Tuesday in Zhuhai, China.

Arca won a gold medal in the boys' Under-14 standard event but settled for silver in the open Under-16 section after losing to Mongolian FM Ganbat Tenguundalai in the sixth round.

Cu finished with bronze in the premier U18 class after losing to Mongolian FM Khishigbat Ulziikhishig in the fifth round, following his fourth-place finish in the standard event earlier.

Both Arca and Cu had additional success, with Arca claiming a blitz bronze medal and Cu earning a blitz mint medal the day before.

Jemaicah Mendoza secured a gold medal by scoring 8.5 points out of nine in the girls' Under-14 standard event on Monday.

Ruelle Canino claimed the bronze medal in the girls' Under-18 category.
