Filipino FM Roel Abelgas secures 2nd in Asian Amateur Open Rapid Chess

Filipino FIDE Master Roel Abelgas secured second place in the Asian Amateur Open Rapid Chess Championships held over the weekend in Hong Kong.

Abelgas defeated Indian player Tuli Utkrisht in the final round and then outscored fellow Filipino FM Alekhine Nouri on tiebreak to claim second position with eight points.

Mongolian FIDE Master Khishigbat Ulziikhishig won the tournament with 8.5 points, while Nouri finished third.

This result marks Abelgas' best performance in recent years; he has primarily focused on coaching and teaching chess, including training Grandmaster Daniel Quizon.

Abelgas' strong showing highlights his enduring skill despite dedicating much of his time to mentoring young players.
