8 cops charged for unlawful arrest of Chinese businessman

Eight police officers from the District Special Operations Unit (DSOU) in Las Piñas City are facing charges for allegedly conducting an unlawful arrest of a Chinese businessman on Wednesday, April 2.

National Capital Region Police Office spokesperson P/Maj. Hazel Asilo confirmed that the DSOU chief remains at large and could face warrants if he fails to report soon.

The suspects were subjected to inquest proceedings before Las Piñas City prosecutors after undergoing medical examinations.

Thirty-one police officers from the EPD-DSOU have been relieved from their posts for allegedly robbing a Chinese businessman of P85 million in cash and valuables during the same incident.

The arrested businessmen's sister stated that the photo on the arrest warrant was of a 'totally different person' and the police asked for P10 billion initially before ordering them to open safe boxes when they said they did not have such an amount.

Legal counsel Atty. Reginaldo Bucu insists that the operation was legal, while the arrested Chinese businessman's friend claims none of the missing valuables and money have been returned.
