Eala, Gauff reach quarters but lose to Errani, Paolini in Italian Open

Filipina tennis star Alex Eala and Grand Slam champion Coco Gauff advanced to the quarterfinals of the 2025 Italian Open women's doubles but were defeated by defending champions Sara Errani and Jasmine Paolini in a close three-set match on Thursday, May 15.

The duo won their previous matches against Lisa Pigato and Tyra Caterina Grant with scores of 6-2, 6-3, and earlier against Alexandra Panova and Fanny Stollar with scores of 6-3, 6-1.

Despite building a 5-3 lead in the first set and winning the second set 6-3, Errani and Paolini overcame an early deficit to win the match by a score of 7-5, 6-3, 10-7 after dominating the super tiebreak.

Eala and Gauff's performance was notable as they won both matches in straight sets before facing Errani and Paolini who were coming off a tough three-set battle against Leylah Fernandez and Yulia Putintseva.

Errani and Paolini, currently ranked No. 6 in the doubles world rankings, have recently won several titles including the Italian Open last year, the women's doubles gold at the Paris Olympics, and the WTA 500 Linz Open and WTA 1000 China Open.
