DSWD implements unified PWD ID system by year-end

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) announced that a unified persons with disability (PWD) identification system will be implemented by the end of 2025.

This initiative aims to address the issue of fake PWD IDs, which have caused significant financial strain on businesses like restaurants.

Authorities recently raided a location in Manila where counterfeit PWD IDs were being printed and the Bureau of Internal Revenue warned against their sale and use.

The new system will standardize the appearance of PWD IDs across the Philippines and include security features such as RFID to verify legitimacy.

DSWD is collaborating with various agencies, including the National Privacy Commission and Department of Information and Communications Technology, to ensure data security and smooth implementation.

Social Welfare Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao said that establishments would be able to access an online system for real-time verification of IDs, addressing issues with manual batch uploading of data.

Under Republic Act 10754, PWDs are entitled to a 20% discount and VAT exemption on certain goods and services.
