DSWD investigates claims of exploiting mentally-challenged woman for political gain

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) will investigate claims that a mentally-challenged person was forced to make statements against Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto.

Mary, a 57-year-old woman with psychological disabilities, appeared in a viral video expressing dissatisfaction over the lack of aid from Sotto's administration.

Mary's family alleged that she was coerced into making these statements and has since clarified that her aunt simply sought free rice from another candidate’s campaign.

DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian ordered an agency fact-finding team to look into the reported exploitation, emphasizing that using persons with disabilities for political purposes may violate R.A. 7610, which protects children and vulnerable adults from abuse and exploitation.

Mary's mother expressed concern over her daughter’s distress since the video was uploaded, highlighting the need to protect individuals with mental disabilities from manipulative practices.
