DOT suspends Mount Kanlaon tourism due to eruption

The Department of Tourism (DOT) has suspended tourism activities near Mount Kanlaon in Negros Occidental following its explosive eruption on Tuesday, April 8.

All tourism-related activities, including treks and visits to nearby cities such as La Carlota City, Bago City, and La Castellana, have been temporarily halted due to ashfall reported in various barangays within these areas.

Ashfall was also reported in Iloilo, Antique, and parts of Guimaras Island, leading local governments to enforce strict prohibitions on entry within a six-kilometer extended danger zone around Mount Kanlaon.

Tourist accommodations remain structurally sound with no stranded tourists recorded as Mount Kanlaon remains at Alert Level 3; the DOT advises travelers to postpone any travel plans and adhere to established safety measures.

The public is urged to stay vigilant, follow official advisories from PHIVOLCS and local authorities, and avoid disseminating unverified information.
