DOH seeks alternative funding for health workers' COVID-19 benefits

The Department of Health (DOH) is seeking alternative ways to provide benefits and compensation for healthcare workers affected by or who died from COVID-19 after the Bayanihan Law expired on June 25.

As of July 2, there are 3,422 health workers infected with COVID-19, with only one in critical condition; at least 2,514 have recovered.

DOH Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire stated that without a new law or legal basis, the department cannot continue providing benefits such as PHP1 million death compensation and PHP100,000 for severe cases.

The DOH is discussing with other government agencies like GSIS to find avenues for continuing these compensations.
