DNA tests on Taal Lake remains for missing sabungeros

Remains recovered from Taal Lake during the search for missing cockfighters will undergo DNA testing to determine if they are human and belong to some of the disappeared individuals.

The Philippine National Police (PNP) Forensic Group is currently examining DNA samples collected from at least 12 relatives of the missing sabungeros, with more family members providing additional specimens for cross-matching.

DOJ spokesperson Mico Clavano noted that DNA samples have been taken to match with any recoveries found in Taal Lake, while forensic pathologist Raquel Fortun has been tapped for further investigation.

Fortun advised authorities to handle recovered remains carefully and avoid burning them to preserve DNA integrity.

Five sacks containing suspected human bones have been retrieved from Taal Lake since Thursday, adding urgency to the cross-matching process.
