Cebu City Jail reports 147 coronavirus cases

As of Friday, April 24, the total number of coronavirus cases in the Cebu City Jail increased to 147, with 17 new cases reported.

Health officials did not specify how many of the new cases are jail staff and inmates.

The jail currently holds 6,000 inmates despite its capacity being only 1,500.

Mass testing began after an inmate who died tested positive for coronavirus on April 19.

Mayor Edgar Labella initially reported 20 new cases but later clarified that three were confirmatory tests of previous cases.

The city is setting up a building to isolate infected inmates; the facility can accommodate 300 detainees.
