291 House members back Romualdez for Speaker

Iloilo Representative Janette Garin announced that 291 House members support Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez for reelection as Speaker of the 20th Congress.

Former President Gloria Arroyo, a Lakas-CMD stalwart and chairman emeritus, confirmed on Friday that she will not seek the speakership and has signed the manifesto of support for Romualdez.

Garin emphasized that Romualdez's ability to be inclusive and consultative has earned him support from fellow lawmakers.

In 2018, Arroyo orchestrated a coup unseating then-Speaker Pantaleon Alvarez on the day of Duterte's SONA, but Garin believes Romualdez is well-suited for the role due to his leadership qualities.

Garin noted that clear intentions and capability are crucial for contesting the Speakership, which is not a bargaining chip.
