Veteran journalist, ex-Kalibo mayor shot dead at home

Veteran journalist and former Kalibo mayor Juan "Johnny" P. Dayang, 89, was shot dead inside his home in Kalibo, Aklan, on Tuesday evening, April 29.

The attack occurred around 8:30 p.m. as Dayang was watching television, with the gunman reportedly firing three shots from outside the perimeter fence before fleeing on a motorcycle.

Dayang, who had reported suspicious individuals circling his home, was found with wounds to his neck and back and declared dead on arrival at the hospital.

A special investigation task group (SITG) has been formed by the PNP, which is pursuing leads and coordinating with the Presidential Task Force on Media Security (PTFoMS).

The Commission on Human Rights (CHR) has also launched an independent investigation into the killing.
