Velasco elected Speaker, ousts Cayetano

186 lawmakers elected Representative Lord Allan Velasco as Speaker of the House of Representatives in an informal session at the Celebrity Sports Plaza in Quezon City on Monday, October 12.

This session led to the ousting of the previous Speaker, Alan Peter Cayetano.

Cayetano did not resign but was ousted, according to 1-Pacman party-list Representative Michael Romero.

Cayetano later announced his irrevocable resignation via Facebook Live on Tuesday, October 13, minutes after Velasco's election was ratified.

Velasco was proclaimed the new House Speaker at the plenary hall of the House of Representatives shortly after Cayetano's resignation announcement.

The election of Velasco was made in accordance with a term-sharing agreement brokered by President Rodrigo R. Duterte.

Velasco's allies convened their meeting outside the House building after Cayetano allegedly refused to open the plenary hall, with Cayetano criticizing their actions.

Cayetano had initially refused to yield the speakership to Velasco by the agreed-upon date of October 14, and had moved to adjourn the session until November 16, leaving the approval of the 2021 national budget unfinished.
