UST Golden Tigresses sweep UE Lady Warriors, eye Final Four twice-to-beat advantage

The University of Santo Tomas (UST) Golden Tigresses swept the University of the East (UE) Lady Warriors with set scores of 25-19, 25-9, and 25-17, bolstering their bid for a twice-to-beat advantage in the UAAP Season 86 women's volleyball Final Four.

Angge Poyos was instrumental in the win, scoring 25 points and breaking the rookie record for most points in a season with 268 points in 12 games, surpassing Faith Nisperos' previous record of 267.

Poyos mentioned she was back to 100 percent after recovering from dehydration, which had caused her to miss a previous match and sit out part of another.

Supporting players Reg Jurado and Pia Abbu contributed 11 and six points respectively, while Cassie Carballo had 17 excellent sets and Detdet Pepito logged 13 digs and 11 receptions.

The Golden Tigresses now hold an 11-2 record, tying them with National University at the top of the standings.

Their final second-round match against defending champion La Salle, also with a strong record, will likely determine their Final Four seeding and the coveted twice-to-beat advantage.

UST head coach Kung Fu Reyes highlighted the importance of securing a top-two spot for a semifinals bonus and emphasized finishing the elimination round strong.
