US vessel arrives to aid Oriental Mindoro oil spill cleanup

The US government-contracted vessel Pacific Valkyrie arrived at Subic Bay, Zambales, to assist in the ongoing oil spill containment operations in Oriental Mindoro.

The vessel carries a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) capable of conducting video and sonar surveys, taking still photographs, and performing work at depth to help salvage the sunken M/T Princess Empress and its contents.

Experts from the US Coast Guard, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and US Navy are also expected to participate in the cleanup.

The US government is also sending 11,000 feet of absorbent harbor boom to prevent further oil spread and personal protective equipment.

The M/T Princess Empress sank on February 28, carrying 800,000 liters of industrial fuel oil, which has harmed coastal communities and fish sanctuaries.

Department of National Defense officer in charge and NDRRMC chair Carlito Galvez Jr. thanked the US government for the assistance, stating it would boost Philippine efforts.
