Oriental Mindoro declared under state of calamity due to oil spill

Twelve out of 14 municipalities in Oriental Mindoro have been affected by the oil spill from the sunken MT Princess Empress, prompting the province to be declared under a state of calamity.

Two towns in Palawan, namely Agutaya and Taytay, along with Caluya town in Antique, were also affected, with Caluya also declared under a state of calamity.

Batangas City and Tingloy town in Batangas are also experiencing the effects of the oil spill.

The MT Princess Empress, carrying 800,000 liters of fuel oil, was reported half submerged off Balingawan Point, Naujan, Oriental Mindoro on February 28.

Oil sightings reached Verde Island in Batangas on March 20, leading the Philippine Coast Guard to elevate its response operations to Tier 3.

In response, the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) is implementing cleanup operations, cash-for-work programs, and distributing donations to affected locals.
