UP Law alumni urge PBBM to cancel POGO licenses

Alumni of the University of the Philippines-College of Law, including retired Supreme Court Associate Justice Antonio Carpio, have urged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to cancel the licenses of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) that cater to Chinese nationals.

The open letter specifically recommends that President Marcos Jr. direct the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) to immediately cancel the licenses to operate of all POGOs serving the Chinese mainland market.

The appeal is partly based on the Chinese Embassy in Manila's request to ban such POGOs, citing that any form of gambling is illegal in China.

The UP Law alumni also highlighted that Chinese-owned POGO operations violate PAGCOR regulations by allowing access to gaming websites within the Philippines or in countries where online gaming is prohibited.

Furthermore, the letter cited that POGO operations are linked to syndicates, involvement in torture and sex trafficking, the use of fake documents, tax evasion, and bribery of government officials.
