TS Leon may intensify into typhoon by Tuesday

Tropical Storm Leon, internationally known as Kong-rey, has maximum sustained winds of 85 km/h and gusts up to 105 km/h, moving westward at 20 kph.

PAGASA raised Tropical Cyclone Wind Signal No. 1 over mainland Cagayan, eastern Isabela, and northeastern Catanduanes on Sunday evening, Oct. 27.

The storm is expected to gradually intensify within 24 hours, possibly becoming a severe tropical storm on Monday and a typhoon on Tuesday.

As of 10 p.m. Sunday, Leon's center was located 915 kilometers east of Central Luzon.

Leon is not expected to make landfall over the country, but its outer rainbands could affect the extreme northern part of Luzon and may bring strong to gale-force winds over Palawan, Romblon, Catanduanes, Sorsogon, Masbate, most of Visayas, Dinagat Islands, Surigao del Norte, and Camiguin tonight.

The storm may eventually come near to, or make landfall in Taiwan.

Leon is forecast to leave the Philippine Area of Responsibility by Wednesday.
