Super typhoon Fung-Wong may hit Northern Luzon by Monday

Tropical Storm Fung-Wong, expected to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) by late Friday or early Saturday and be named Uwan, may intensify into a super typhoon.

The US Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC) forecasts Uwan may reach peak intensity Sunday afternoon, just offshore the Bicol region, with maximum sustained winds potentially reaching 212 kilometers per hour and gusts of 259 kph.

The JTWC stated that the environment ahead of Fung-wong is favorable for further intensification, allowing for the possibility of rapid intensification, and that the tropical cyclone will continue to strengthen all the way through landfall over northeast Luzon.

A landfall intensity around 185 kph is considered feasible, with the strike point potentially north of Casiguran, Aurora, and an exit into the West Philippine Sea near Vigan.

PAGASA forecasts Fung-Wong could reach super typhoon status by Saturday, with a possibility of landfall in Northern or Central Luzon on Monday, November 10.

Life-threatening stormy conditions are anticipated over Northern and Central Luzon on Monday and Tuesday, with the highest warning signal, Signal No. 5, possibly being raised.

A state of national calamity has been declared by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. in preparation for the incoming tropical cyclone and in response to Typhoon Kalmaegi's destruction.

The public is advised to continuously monitor updates due to high uncertainty in the track and intensity forecast.
