Trade chief: PH economy can't handle another lockdown

Trade Secretary Ramon Lopez stated that the Philippine economy cannot withstand another nationwide lockdown, especially with the rising threat of the Delta variant.

He highlighted that a previous enhanced community quarantine (ECQ) in March to April resulted in P30 billion in lost wages.

Lopez warned that another ECQ in Metro Manila could lead to the closure of 16% of establishments, affecting 1.8 million workers.

Despite recommendations from OCTA Research for a two-week lockdown in the National Capital Region (NCR), the government opted to extend the general community quarantine (GCQ) with heightened restrictions for August 1 to 15.
