SPD reports 22% crime drop in Q1 2025

The Southern Police District (SPD) reported a 22 percent reduction in overall crime incidents within its jurisdiction during the first quarter of 2025 compared to the last quarter of 2024, with cases dropping from 348 to 272.

Notable reductions were observed in theft cases, which dropped by 39% (from 141 to 86), and rape cases, which decreased by 37% (from 65 to 41).

Physical injury cases saw a 32% decline (from 47 to 32), while robbery incidents experienced a 6% reduction (from 49 to 46).

The SPD attributes these decreases to intensified police operations, increased visibility, and enhanced community engagement.

However, homicide cases increased by 138% (from eight to 19), murder cases climbed by 44% (from 18 to 26), and motor vehicle theft rose by 33% (from six to eight).

SPD chief Brig. Gen. Manuel Abrugena stated that these results underscore the effectiveness of their operational adjustments and strengthened partnership with the public.

In response to the increases, Abrugena has ordered a recalibration of police operations, including focused intelligence gathering and intensified patrols in identified hotspots.
