Sotto urges mandatory random drug test for Senate staff

Senate Minority Leader Vicente Sotto III has formally urged Senate President Francis Escudero to implement a mandatory random drug test for all Senate officials and employees.

This call follows recent news reports alleging marijuana use within the Senate building, specifically on the fifth floor.

Sotto cited the supposed drug use of staffer Nadia Montenegro, who is connected with Senator Robin Padilla, in the fifth floor women's restroom.

He recalled that the Senate previously conducted similar random drug tests in 2018, in accordance with Republic Act 9165 and relevant Civil Service Commission and Senate policies.

Sotto emphasized that maintaining a drug-free workplace is crucial for upholding morale, efficiency, integrity, and accountability in public service.

Senate President Escudero confirmed receiving Sotto's letter and stated that a more detailed response regarding measures already taken is forthcoming from his office.
