Soldier wounded, Dawlah Islamiya-Maute member killed in Lanao Sur encounter

One soldier was wounded in an encounter with a Dawlah Islamiya-Maute Group member in Barangay Kalangan, Piagapo, Lanao del Sur on Saturday, January 25.

The military was alerted to the presence of Dawlah Islamiya-Maute Group members collecting money and food from villagers at gunpoint.

Soldiers from the 44th Infantry Battalion were patrolling when the terrorists attacked, leading to a gunfight.

The Dawlah Islamiya-Maute Group member, identified by villagers as Usman, was killed in the encounter.

Recovered from the encounter site were an M16 rifle, an M14 rifle, a pack of incendiary powder, and components of improvised explosive devices.

Lt. Gen. Antonio G. Nafarrete, commander of the Army's Western Mindanao Command, expressed gratitude to local officials and traditional community leaders for their assistance in tracking down remaining local terrorists.
