Romualdez denies involvement in flood control scandal

Ombudsman Jesus Crispin Remulla disclosed that former House Speaker Martin Romualdez contacted him to deny any involvement in the flood control corruption controversy.

Romualdez reportedly called Remulla after the latter's appointment as Ombudsman but before he officially took office to assert his lack of involvement in questionable infrastructure projects.

The Office of the Ombudsman expects to file 14 to 15 more cases related to the flood control scandal before the year ends, with charges already filed against former Ako-Bicol party-list Rep. Zaldy Co, several Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) officials, and Sunwest Corporation directors.

These initial charges are connected to an alleged anomalous P289 million flood control project in Oriental Mindoro.

Additionally, the Independent Commission for Infrastructure (ICI) and DPWH have recommended the filing of plunder, graft, and bribery charges against Co and former Speaker Martin Romualdez.

Remulla assured that cases will only be filed if well-documented and solid, and he has yet to review the recommendation against Romualdez.
