Rep. Brosas slams Duterte for sex jokes amid typhoon response

Gabriela Women's Party Representative Arlene Brosas criticized President Rodrigo Duterte for making inappropriate sex jokes during a televised briefing about the government's typhoon response.

Brosas stated that it was audacious for Duterte to make jokes when people were suffering and dying due to recent calamities.

The jokes were made during a briefing concerning the typhoons that have hit the Bicol region, with Typhoon Ulysses alone claiming at least 67 lives.

Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque stated that Duterte's remarks were intended to "lighten the mood" amid the destruction caused by successive storms.

Roque explained that it is a Filipino trait to try and lighten problems even during difficult times.

Vice President Leni Robredo also commented on the incident, describing the exchange of jokes as 'bad communication'.

Brosas urged the government to prioritize emergency assistance over sexist remarks and called for an apology and explanation regarding the lack of preparedness and inadequate response.
