Pork prices remain high amid supply issues

Pork prices in Philippine markets continue to exceed the suggested retail price (SRP) as Holy Week begins.

Department of Agriculture (DA) Assistant Secretary Genevive Guevarra stated that market prices are up to P60 higher per kilo than the SRP.

DA and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) conducted market inspections to ensure vendors comply with the SRP.

The DA set the SRP in early March at P380 per kilo for liempo, P350 per kilo for kasim and pigue, and P300 per kilo for 'sabit ulo'.

Despite DA's call for retailers to align with guidelines and noted decrease in delivery costs, prices remain high due to persistent supply disruptions, soaring production costs, and market inefficiencies.

The African swine fever (ASF) outbreak has caused a dramatic 75-percent drop in supply from local producers, from 3,114 metric tons in 2023 to 753 metric tons in 2024.
