PNP seeks OCD help in probing toxic chemical source

The Philippine National Police (PNP) is seeking the Office of Civil Defense's (OCD) cooperation in investigating the source of toxic chemicals used in decontamination procedures at the Philsports Arena.

PNP Chief Gen. Archie Gamboa clarified that the OCD is not being blamed but is being asked to assist in identifying the chemicals' origin, as they accredited the service providers for PNP-operated quarantine facilities.

This clarification comes after Gamboa previously stated that the OCD managed the Philsports Arena and provided chemicals and PPE.

OCD Spokesperson Mark Timbal reiterated that the agency did not provide any decontamination chemicals and that their involvement was limited to arranging services like food catering, lodging, PPE, and waste collection.

Timbal emphasized that the OCD is not involved in the actual management and operation of COVID-19 facilities, expressing confidence that the PNP, which manages the Ultra facility, can resolve the issue.

The incidents involve police personnel, including a doctor who died and several others who were hospitalized, after reportedly inhaling toxic chemicals during decontamination on May 24 and May 30.
