The Philippine National Police (PNP) is linking the rise in kidnappings involving Chinese nationals to the influx of Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGO) workers.
According to PNP Deputy Director for Operations Guillermo Eleazar, there have been 73 POGO-related kidnapping cases from 2017 to 2020, with all 80 victims being Chinese.
He stated that the increase in crime is directly dependent on the number of Chinese nationals arriving in the Philippines.
While acknowledging the economic benefits of POGOs, Eleazar expressed concern over the adverse consequences, such as the proliferation of prostitution dens catering to Chinese nationals.
Most of the 142 suspects apprehended in these cases were Chinese, working in collusion with some Filipinos.
