Phivolcs raises Mt Bulusan alert to Level 1 after phreatic eruption

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has raised Mt. Bulusan's alert status to Level 1 (low-level unrest) following a 24-minute phreatic eruption on Monday.

Phivolcs Director Dr. Teresito Bacolcol warned that another steam-driven eruption could occur in the coming days.

The eruption produced a plume that rose 4,500 meters above the crater, and subsequent ash emission on Tuesday was recorded at 100 meters.

For the past 24 hours, Mt. Bulusan registered 89 volcanic earthquakes, an increase in seismic activity that can precede an eruption.

The public is strongly advised to stay out of the 4-kilometer permanent danger zone due to the risk of a recurring phreatic eruption, even at Level 0 alert.

Phivolcs had previously issued an advisory on April 21 due to increased seismic activity and urged vigilance from local government units and residents.
