Phivolcs issues lahar advisory for Mayon Volcano due to heavy rainfall

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has issued a lahar advisory for areas surrounding Mayon Volcano in Albay due to heavy rainfall brought by the shear line.

The shear line, a weather system where cold northeast monsoon winds meet warm easterly winds, is expected to cause persistent heavy rainfall over Southern Luzon, Bicol Region, and Eastern Visayas.

Phivolcs warned that this heavy rainfall could trigger volcanic sediment flows, or lahars, in the drainage areas of Mayon Volcano.

Prolonged rains may also lead to non-eruption lahars along various river and stream channels associated with the volcano.

At-risk channels include Miisi, Binaan, Anoling, Quirangay, Maninila, Masarawag, Muladbucad, Nasisi, Mabinit, Matanag, Bonga, Buyuan, Basud, and Bulawan.

Phivolcs urged local government units and affected communities to monitor weather conditions and implement preemptive measures.
