Over 1,000 aftershocks recorded in Davao Oriental following twin quakes

The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) has recorded over 1,000 aftershocks following separate offshore earthquakes that struck Manay, Davao Oriental.

A magnitude 7.4 earthquake occurred on Friday, October 10, followed by a magnitude 6.8 earthquake later that day, with both sharing the same epicenter.

As of Sunday noon, October 12, a total of 1,111 aftershocks were recorded, with 511 plotted and 14 felt, ranging in magnitude from 1.2 to 5.8.

Phivolcs Director Teresito Bacolcol advised residents to consult with engineers before returning to damaged homes, as aftershocks could cause further structural damage.

The National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported that eight people were killed and 385 others were injured.

A total of 125,283 families or 491,258 individuals were affected by the earthquakes.
