Phivolcs warns of Kanlaon lahars amid heavy rainfall

Moderate to heavy rainfall on Kanlaon Volcano's slopes in Negros Island Region has triggered channel-confined lahars, according to Phivolcs.

These volcanic sediments were observed on the volcano's southern and southwestern sides.

Netizens and local officials reported cohesive, cement-like lahars in areas like Buhangin River and Hacienda 92 Bridge in La Castellana, Negros Occidental.

Phivolcs warns that the ongoing rainy season increases the risk of lahars in rivers draining the southern Kanlaon edifice, especially those previously affected.

Lahars pose a threat to downstream communities through inundation, burial, and washout.

Phivolcs urges communities and local government units along these rivers to remain vigilant and prepared for preemptive actions during heavy rainfall over the volcano's upper slopes.
