OCD monitors Mt Kanlaon over high SO2 emissions

The Office of Civil Defense (OCD) is monitoring Mount Kanlaon due to significant sulfur dioxide emissions, raising concerns about a potential eruption.

Atty. Chris Bendijo from OCD explained that low sulfur dioxide emissions can indicate a pressure build-up within the volcano, potentially leading to phreatic or major/minor eruptions.

Over the past hours, Mount Kanlaon has recorded more than 1,000 tons of sulfur dioxide emissions and 16 volcanic earthquakes, which are considered alarming.

The volcano's edifice is currently inflated, suggesting the possibility of magma release at any time.

More than 92,000 individuals, comprising over 23,500 families, are currently affected and receiving assistance in evacuation centers.

Bendijo also mentioned the recent passage and implementing rules and regulations of the Ligtas Pinoy Centers Act, which mandates every municipality to have a Ligtas Pinoy Center.
