PH respects Myanmar's independence amid coup

The Philippines, through Chief Presidential Legal Counsel Salvador Panelo, has stated it will not intervene in Myanmar's internal affairs following the military coup and arrest of State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi.

While concerned, the Philippine government respects Myanmar's independence, a principle mirrored in its own desire to avoid foreign interference.

Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque indicated the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) would issue an official statement.

The DFA has expressed its "deep concern" over the situation and advised Filipinos in Myanmar to exercise caution.

This stance drew criticism from Albay Rep. Edcel Lagman, who urged the government to take a stronger position against the coup.

Panelo, however, advised Lagman to focus on his legislative duties and trust Foreign Affairs Secretary Teodoro Locsin Jr. to handle the situation.

The Philippine embassy in Myanmar remains prepared to assist Filipino nationals if necessary.
